Our advice is always based on understanding your goals. It comes from experience working in-house and at communications agencies. Where appropriate it will be complemented by partner professional support from other communications, investor relations, marketing and design experts.
Our goal is to work with high quality management teams with interesting business stories and become their long-term communications partners.
Starting out first with your investors we look across your stakeholders and ensure the messages are right and they are heard by the people and institutions that matter. For different companies this means different things. During a transaction or a crisis this changes again. By understanding your company and earning your trust we aim to be ready to plan for and then implement the communications that supports your business whatever the circumstances.
Tom Randell qualified as a solicitor at Linklaters in the City and then worked at financial PR agencies Brunswick and Merlin. After 9 months as a B&B chef and orchard keeper in the US he worked for an AIM listed E&P business Max Petroleum and then as Head of Investor Relations and Communications at FTSE250 listed John Laing Group and then head of Investor Relations at William Hill. After leaving William Hill he worked at a social media data analysis business, an investor relations consultancy and a financial and corporate PR agency before setting up Thou PR.
“Thou“ is an acronym as well as being a term for “you” (as opposed to “me”). The idea is that Thou works for you, the team is not standard and is designed to best achieve your goals.
After over 22 years working in investor and corporate communications Thou PR applies lessons from working in agencies and also being their client. Because its better for clients, and for hanging on to the good ones, and because it’s much more satisfying Thou PR never charges by the hour nor argues if a client wishes to end the business relationship. Detailed timesheets are a bore and frequently do not reflect either effort or value. And life is too short and its not fun at all working for an unhappy client.
Tom Randell has worked internationally for a wide range of businesses, big and small and from many sectors. This has involved many different investor relations and communications challenges. For businesses without in-house expertise and not wishing to employ a large agency it can be valuable to be able to access this experience.
When we start work we always do a deep delve into a clients business and audit their communications and investor relations activities. We need to agree what resources are needed to accomplish their goals over what timescale. Then we start to implement and to track performance and give and receive honest feedback.
If you don’t think your agency has all the relevant experience it needs and you don’t want to pay for a cast of thousands from a large agency then Thou could be for you. You must be prepared to think hard about your goals and how to explain your strategy and be happy to be given realistic guidance on what can be achieved, from the beginning, at what cost.
Above all we want to get results that help your business. Our goal is to work in partnership with you and remain agnostic on what specific communications you need to do. You might not need financial PR or a new website, but instead to handle your investor relations in a simpler and more professional way or you may need to tell your ESG story to get more partners. We won’t try and sell you services you probably don’t need.
